THE STAGES OF OUR HISTORY

The Museum

On May 26, 2007, the Museum of Rural Civilization was inaugurated, showcasing the winemaking soul of the Maremma. A visit to the Museum of Rural Civilization at Rocca di Montemassi offers an experience of the places, the people, and a perception of history: this site, of great historical and cultural value to the local community, houses over three thousand objects and a photographic documentation that narrates more than a hundred years of agricultural lifestyle.

The "Maremmana"

In 2017, cultivation of “Khorasan wheat” began for the production of single-grain pasta, and a breeding program for Maremma cows was introduced. The "Maremmana" is one of the most recognizable cattle breeds, known for its long horns and gray coat. The still pristine lands of Rocca di Montemassi provide the ideal habitat for these magnificent animals, allowing them to graze freely and feed on the grass of the meadows.

EQUALITAS

In 2018, Rocca di Montemassi obtained EQUALITAS Certification, an important recognition of the company's commitment to environmental, ethical, and economic sustainability. The EQUALITAS standard allows businesses in the sector to adopt an internal sustainability management system and to publish an annual Sustainability Report, ensuring continuous monitoring of standards for their stakeholders.

100% ORGANIC

Since June 2021, the estate has completed its transition to organic farming, a comprehensive management system for agricultural and food production based on the interaction between best practices for the environment and climate action, a high level of biodiversity, the protection of natural resources, and the application of strict criteria for animal welfare and rigorous production standards.

THE TERRITORY

A vast coastal area that occupies parts of Tuscany and upper Lazio, starting south of the provinces of Pisa and Livorno and extending beyond Tarquinia, passing through Rosignano Marittimo, Piombino, Punta Ala, the mouth of the Ombrone River, the Uccellina Mountains, the Orbetello Lagoon, Lake Burano, the Tolfa Mountains, and Chiarone. This is the Maremma, characterized by such diverse environments that they create a land that is both sweet and harsh, rugged, ancient, and wild, with its charming old villages, the endless allure of its landscapes, and the incredible light of its sunrises and sunsets.

THE GROSSETANA MAREMMA

The central Maremma, known as the Grossetana, is the true heart of the larger Maremma territory. It is a long stretch of coastal plain that extends from the Gulf of Follonica to the Chiarone River, near the medieval village of Capalbio, and to the south, it surpasses the Silver Coast with the Argentario Promontory. Numerous itineraries allow for the rediscovery of coasts, landscapes, atmospheres, contrasts, fascinating ruins, intense aromas, vibrant colors, culinary delights, and fine wines, through the wine tourism routes of the Wine Roads. These routes enable us to decipher the hidden meanings of this land, its history, and its people.

ROCCASTRADA

Rocca di Montemassi is located at the foot of the ancient village of Montemassi in Southern Tuscany, between the Mediterranean coast and the Metalliferous Hills. The area enjoys a unique natural landscape and microclimate: cool breezes from the sea temper the summer heat, and there are significant temperature variations between day and night. The sunlight has an extraordinary beneficial effect on grape ripening. The diverse soils are rich in mineral deposits, iron, and clay.
